About Historyoftruth

We Start With the Light

Historyoftruth paints interiors in Santa Monica and the surrounding west side. We are on Wilshire Blvd, and most of what we do is within a few miles of the water, in the 90405 ZIP and the ones around it.

The reason we lead with color rather than with coatings is simple. The complaints we get called out to fix are almost never about workmanship. Somebody picked a color under one kind of light and then had to live with it under another, and no amount of good brushwork saves that.

What Coastal Light Actually Does

Through the late spring and summer the marine layer sits over this part of the coast most mornings. Until it lifts, the light in your rooms is soft, even and slightly cool, with very little contrast and almost no shadow. It is genuinely flattering light and it makes almost any neutral look calm.

Then it clears. By mid afternoon a west facing room can be taking direct sun plus a second helping bounced off a pale stucco wall next door. The same neutral now has a strong warm cast running through it, the undertone comes forward, and the color you approved in the morning is not the color you are looking at.

A store showroom has neither of those lights. Fluorescent and LED display lighting is consistent, which is the whole problem: it never shows you the swing your own room is going to put the paint through.

How We Work

We paint boards, not patches. Two coats, roughly two feet square, moved around the room and looked at on more than one day and at more than one hour. Then we write down what won and why, so that if you repaint a hallway in three years you are not starting from nothing.

After that it is ordinary painting done properly. Surfaces get washed, patched, sanded and caulked before anything else happens, because prep is where most of the labor and most of the final quality sit. Older Santa Monica housing gives us plenty to do there: Spanish Colonial Revival plaster with hairline cracking, Ocean Park and Sunset Park bungalows with layers of old enamel on the trim, and apartment stock built anywhere from the 1920s through the 1970s.

Honest About What You Do Not Need

If your existing color is right and the walls are sound, we will say so. If a room is dark because it faces north and has one small window, we will tell you that a lighter paint will help a little and will not fix it. Paint is a good tool with real limits, and pretending otherwise is how people end up paying twice.
